2021 Best Southern and Soul Food

Soul food meets soulful music at this longtime fixture, where live entertainment is the soundtrack for dinner and brunch service featuring dressed-up southern comforts like country-fried chicken wings with sweet peach chili and oh-so-perfect collard greens. The bands play on thanks to still-new owner Nia Grace, who not only stewarded the storied spot to the other side of a pandemic, but — as cofounder of the recently launched Boston Black Hospitality Coalition — uses her significant stage to advocate for a more equitable restaurant industry in the city.

At Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen, a Change in Ownership Doesn’t Mean a Change in Vibe

Nia Grace knows the importance of the space at 604 Columbus Ave. in Boston’s South End. She grew up in Roxbury and Dorchester, attended Mission Grammar and Cathedral High, and, despite sojourns to Miami and New York City, has spent much of her adult life living in her native Boston. So when she bought Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen from former owner Darryl Settles in September, she did so with purpose. “This place has been a cornerstone for generational meet-ups,” Grace told Eater. “And it’s time for our generation to come in and be here.”

You know their faces — and they know yours. Career servers give a restaurant its pulse, and elevate hospitality to an art. So in a world that regularly worships rock star–style toques, we wanted to take a moment to salute longtime servers — many of whom have worked at their restaurants, from fine-dining institutions to beloved neighborhood favorites, since the beginning. Southern comfort food is the order of the day at this South End spot serving everything from fried catfish strips to shrimp 'n' grits and chicken and waffles. Eponymous founder Darryl Settles is a successful local real estate developer and the founder of the Beantown Jazz Festival, so unsurprisingly there's a focus on live music too. Local solo performers and small bands, including students from nearby Berklee College of Music, set up nightly. And Sunday's all-you-can-eat jazz brunch is a weekly neighborhood tradition.
Boston’s Best Bars With Live Weekday Music

Jazz, jazz jazz! Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen has all that jazz when it comes to delivering live music on the weekdays, specifically on Tuesdays when the atmosphere at Darryl’s does its best impression of old school New Orleans soul. Speaking of soul, this joint’s specialization in comfort food classics fits in perfectly with that Tuesday night jazz beat, providing just as much of a culinary punch as it does that be-bop jazz backbeat. Darryl’s is definitely a cool place to check out on a weeknight.
