Originally from Lima, Peru, six times Grammy Winner, studied at the Conservatory of Music in Lima.
He worked extensively doing studio work and live performances with many international artists and local bands before moving to the United States in 1979. He studied Harmony and Improvisation with pianist - educator Mike Marra and the great Jazz sax player Jerry Bergonzi. Since then, Oscar has been an active performer and one of the most versatile bass players on the East Coast.
His mastery of playing different music styles from jazz and fusion to Latin jazz, Brazilian jazz, and South American music has helped him travel the world performing with the very best Latin jazz artists.

Bass Player magazine - "Oscar's technical agility, advanced harmonic and melodic knowledge, and grounding in funk and R&B--as well as his dedication to Latin traditions-give him the ultimate flexibility when it comes time to lay down a groove."

Latin Beat Magazine
The North-Eastern U.S. was also blessed with other gifted jazz bass players of Latin origin and/or orientiation ...Oscar Stagnaro is a first-call soldier of fortune, but there is a dimension of his musical persona that deserves greater recognition: Paquito D'Rivera's favorite Peruvian-Bostonian is a distinguished bass professor at Berklee College of Music.
